Vučić announces resignation: I will only be in office for a few more weeks

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has announced that he will step down within the next few weeks, leaving the way open for early elections in the country.

According to his statement at a rally with supporters in Belgrade, Vučić said he would only stay in office for a short period before resigning.

"I will only be president for a few weeks and then I will resign," Vucic told a rally of supporters in Belgrade.

He was first elected president in 2017 and was re-elected in 2022 for a term that would normally end next year.

The statement comes at a time of political tension in Serbia, where the government has been facing months of ongoing anti-government protests, sparked by the fatal accident at the Novi Sad train station.

It remains unclear whether the announced resignation will lead to early elections and how the political scene in the country will be reconfigured.
