Mexican fans were disappointed after their "star" was not allowed to watch the match against the Czech Republic from the stands, due to FIFA rules that prohibit animals from entering stadiums.

Merlin, the duck that has become one of the most unusual symbols of the Mexican national team in the 2026 World Cup, has become a real social phenomenon during this World Cup, so much so that fans had launched a campaign to have him in the stadium as an official supporter of “El Tri”. However, FIFA made no exception.

The duck was only allowed in the area around the Azteca stadium, where he also did a report with the television network Televisa. Accompanied by his owner, Karla Gomez, and her son Kristian, Merlin arrived in a transport cage, while many fans gathered to get a closer look.

Despite his great enthusiasm, his adventure ended at the entrance to the stadium. According to FIFA, animals are not allowed inside sports facilities for safety and welfare reasons, while the organization confirmed that he can only stay on the outer perimeter.

"These days have been incredible, we can't stop thanking people for their support for Merlin," his owner, Karla Gomez, told the Associated Press. In the meantime, the duckling remains a social media sensation and a beloved figure in Mexico, often wearing the green jersey of the national team and appearing at various public events.

Although he won't be in the stands, his supporters believe the feathered "talisman" will continue to bring luck to the Mexican national team at the 2026 World Cup.
