Foods to avoid in the heat and healthier alternatives

During hot weather, the way we eat can significantly affect our energy and hydration levels. According to dietitians, some foods that usually seem "summer-appropriate" may not be the best choice.

One of them is ice cream. Although it provides a feeling of freshness in the moment, it contains a lot of sugar and fat, which slows down digestion and can increase the feeling of heat later. As an alternative, cold smoothies with fruit or yogurt, as well as frozen fruit combined with natural ingredients, are recommended.

Even highly salty foods, such as chips or processed snacks, are not advisable during the heat, as they increase thirst and can promote dehydration. Instead, the best alternative is light baked foods such as crispy chickpeas or unsalted nuts.

Also, white bread and foods that are too heavy for the stomach can cause a feeling of sluggishness on hot days. Replacing them with fresh salads, vegetable wraps, or foods rich in water helps the body stay lighter and hydrated.

For main meals, experts suggest simple combinations like bowls of rice, fish or vegetables, or cold dishes like gazpacho, which is particularly rich in water, vitamins and antioxidants.

Basically, the main advice for hot days is simple: light, fresh, and minimally processed foods help the body cope better with the heat.
