Summer holidays 2026 in Europe: "short escapes" and fresh destinations

Summer travel in Europe is undergoing a clear shift in 2026, with holidaymakers increasingly turning to "quick getaways" and cooler climate destinations.

According to data from travel platform Trip.com, demand for short breaks, typically up to four days, has seen a significant increase. Average stays during the June-August season range from around 3 to 4 days, while short-haul flights dominate summer bookings.

The trend comes at a time when, despite economic and geopolitical uncertainties in Europe, travel demand has not shown a decline. On the contrary, short-haul flight bookings have increased significantly compared to a year ago.

Another strong trend is family travel, which is seen as the most preferred form of vacation, surpassing trips as a couple or with friends. This is also reflected in the increase in family hotel bookings during the summer season.

Meanwhile, high temperatures in various parts of Europe are affecting the choices of tourists, who are increasingly looking for cooler destinations. Countries such as Iceland, Norway, Slovenia, Switzerland and Wales have seen an increase in interest compared to last year.

Tourism industry experts point out that the combination of heat waves and changes in travel patterns is shaping a new vacation pattern in Europe, where short trips and "cool" destinations are gaining more and more popularity.
