Over 1,300 dead from heatwave in Europe

Extreme heat waves have caused over 1,300 deaths in Europe since June 21, according to data released by the director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

In a response on the social network X, he stressed that Europe remains the continent experiencing the fastest warming in the world, at rates about twice the global average. According to him, about 150 million inhabitants on the continent are currently facing extreme temperatures, which pose a serious health risk.

Ghebreyesus highlighted that many buildings, including homes, schools and workplaces, are not designed to withstand such high temperatures, making citizens even more exposed to the effects of the heat.

The head of the WHO warned that heat waves can no longer be considered rare events. According to him, phenomena that once occurred once every few decades are now recurring almost every year, as a result of climate change and global warming.

He said that WHO is working closely with Member States and international partners to improve preparedness and response to emergencies caused by high temperatures. At the same time, he called on European governments to develop and implement effective plans to protect public health during heat waves, considering this a priority in the face of the challenges posed by climate change.
