Scotland coach resigns after World Cup exit

The Scotland coach has resigned after his team was eliminated from the World Cup last night.

The Scottish Football Association described Clarke as "the most successful national team manager".

His tenure came to an end after a disappointing World Cup campaign, where the Tartan Army were caught behind in a series of results that should have gone their way.

However, Croatia's 2-1 victory over Ghana dashed those hopes.
Clarke had been in charge for seven years and in an open letter to supporters, Clarke said:

"The most emotional part of this farewell is for my players, without whom we would not have had any of the memories we have accumulated from 2019 to now. They deserve all the praise and admiration they receive and it was truly an honour to be called their 'Gaffer'. Thank you for inviting me and good luck to my successor."

Ian Maxwell, chief executive of the Scottish Football Association, added:

" While we are all disappointed to be eliminated from the World Cup at the group stage, we must not forget the undeniable progress made during Steve's seven years in charge.

"From starting as a fourth-tier team in 2019 to topping our World Cup qualifying group, he has done more than enough to get Scotland back to a major tournament.

"We thank Steve for his record-breaking contribution and know that when the disappointment of World Cup elimination wears off, Scotland supporters will be grateful for the memories of marching proudly at major tournaments once again ."

Clarke's last outing as Scotland manager was a punishing defeat to Brazil.
