After World Cup failure, South Korea coach targets threats

South Korea's early elimination from the 2026 World Cup has sparked strong reactions in the country, to the point that authorities have launched an investigation into a death threat against former national team coach Hong Myung-bo.

According to South Korean media, an internet user claiming to be a 41-year-old American citizen posted a message warning that he would attack the coach at Incheon International Airport upon his return to South Korea. Following the post, police opened an investigation to identify the perpetrator and assess the seriousness of the threat.

Meanwhile, the fans' anger has not been limited to social media. Manipulated images have circulated online claiming that Hong had ordered the players to leave separately upon arrival at the airport, while symbolic notices reading "Hong Myung-bo banned" have been displayed at several restaurants and cafes in Gyeonggi Province.

The great disappointment came after a 1-0 defeat to South Africa in the final group stage match, a result that ended South Korea's hopes of advancing to the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup.

Due to the tense situation, the national team's return to their homeland will take place under increased security measures, while authorities are closely monitoring any potential threats to the former coach.
