When “irony” becomes an alibi: Rama, the starchitects and “The Albanian Files”
Shooting in Germany, 5 killed and several injured
Swiss newspaper echoes protests against Rama government: Albania is not for sale!

The protests that have been taking place in Tirana for a month against the Rama government have also attracted the attention of international media.
The Swiss newspaper Aargauer Zeitung dedicates an extensive article to the movement called the "Flamingo Revolution", analyzing the reasons for the protests, the opposition to the investment linked to Jared Kushner's company, the Albanian government's reaction, and the voices of citizens who have joined the demonstrations.
Below, Politiko.al brings the full article published by the Swiss media:
1. Why are there protests in Tirana?
For weeks, every evening, thousands of people have gathered in the Albanian capital, Tirana, for protest marches against a luxury construction project, in which a company owned by US President Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, is involved.
The demonstrations have attracted attention around the world – not least because of the flamingo figures that protesters hold aloft, which have given this still young movement the name "Flamingo Revolution".
The protests have been going on for weeks now.
Although the protesters do not belong to any particular party, almost all of them are demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama.
2. What is expected to be built there?
The luxury project consists of two parts: a small resort on the island of Sazan, a former uninhabited military base from the communist era, and a construction development in a coastal area near the Narta Lagoon.
This area is currently under natural protection; wetland species, such as flamingos, are found there.
The project includes hotels, apartments, villas and a marina for yachts.
Fatma Paja works by hand, producing foam flamingos, which are used during protests against a coastal development project in western Albania.
The project has caused outrage because, according to environmentalists, it would irreversibly destroy hitherto untouched nature and a unique habitat.
Protesters are demanding a halt to the project and are highlighting the lack of transparency, as well as the fact that environmental standards have not been respected in many similar projects.
3. Who is behind the “Flamingo Revolution”?
People like the artist Fatma Paja.
She lives in Tirana and runs, together with her two sisters, a creative studio.
The 28-year-old, along with several other artists, has created foam-cut flamingos, which have now become an integral part of the evening gatherings.
“I am against an elitist project that blocks and destroys a completely protected area,” she says.
"It has no legal basis and is not supported by any study on the damage it will cause to the environment and nature."
He emphasizes that the clearing of surfaces by cutting vegetation within a protected natural area has already begun.
5. Why are older people joining the protests?
Unlike most other protests that Albania has experienced during more than three decades of democracy, this time more and more pensioners are joining the young protesters.
Among them is Bujare Ishmi, 70, a former engineer. She takes part in protests almost every evening, holding a banner that reads: “You have the power of crime, we have the power of truth.”
70-year-old Bujare Ishmi has become a symbolic figure in the protests against a controversial tourism project in Albania. She is demanding more transparency and the rule of law in major state projects.
"Nona! Nona!" the protesters chant as she arrives.
The word "Nona" is an Albanian nickname for an elderly female family member and indicates that she is considered the matriarch of the protests.
Ishmi, whose husband was a former political prisoner and victim of Enver Hoxha's 40-year dictatorship, describes Albanian democracy as "half-baked."
She emphasizes that she is not against foreign investment, but is concerned about the lack of transparency.
"Investments bring progress, but the right conditions and rules must be respected."
