He spent 6 thousand dollars to see Messi, but was left outside the stadium

What was supposed to be an unforgettable surprise for an ardent Lionel Messi fan turned into a huge disappointment for a family from Mexico.

Sergio Enrique Alvarado Montalvo spent $1,700 on two tickets purchased through the StubHub platform, with the intention of giving his father the opportunity to closely follow the Argentina-Austria match in the 2026 World Cup. In addition to the tickets, he also paid thousands of dollars for the family's flights and accommodation in Dallas.

However, just a day before departure, he received a notification that the seller was unable to secure the tickets. According to him, StubHub did not offer him comparable seats, arguing that market prices had increased significantly.

Despite this, the family traveled to the stadium in the hope that the situation would be resolved in the last moments. Montalvo continued to communicate with the platform until shortly before the start of the match, but without result.

"I felt sadness, frustration and anger. It was a mix of emotions that is hard to describe," he told the BBC.

His case is not isolated. According to industry experts, many 2026 World Cup fans have faced unexpected cancellations of tickets purchased on the secondary market.

One of the main reasons is related to so-called "speculative tickets", a practice where sellers put up for sale tickets they do not yet own, hoping to obtain them later at a lower price.

When demand increases and prices go to much higher levels, they renege on the initial agreement to sell tickets more expensively, leaving buyers without tickets and with a refund that does not cover travel and accommodation costs.
