Barcelona equips employees with smart bracelets to monitor heat

The extreme heat wave that has hit Spain, causing over 1,000 deaths in June alone, has forced authorities in Barcelona to take additional measures to protect employees working outdoors.

The city municipality has distributed around 1,400 smart bracelets to employees engaged in the field, including street cleaners, lighting maintenance teams, parks workers and waste management workers.

The devices monitor the user's body temperature and, if they detect signs of overheating or a health risk, emit audible and vibration signals as a warning. In these cases, employees are instructed to stop work immediately to avoid the consequences of heat stroke.

The decision comes after several fatal cases recorded in recent years in Spain, where workers exposed to high temperatures lost their lives during working hours.

One of the most sensational cases was that of a 51-year-old woman who died in June last year while cleaning the streets of Barcelona's historic center. On that day, temperatures reached 30.4 degrees Celsius. The city opened an investigation into the incident, and authorities said that heatstroke was not proven to be the cause of death.
