Protests in Albania towards the EP, the '5 Star' Movement demands

The civic protests that have been taking place in Albania for more than a month are expected to be discussed in the European Parliament.

The head of the 5 Star Movement delegation to the European Parliament, Pasquale Tridico, announced at a press conference in Strasbourg that a proposal has been filed to hold a debate in next week's plenary session, which would then be followed by a resolution on the situation in Albania.

According to Tridico, the discussion is not only about Albania, but also about the need to guarantee democratic dialogue and the inclusion of civil society in decision-making processes.

The debate is proposed under the title "Council and Commission Declaration on the situation in Albania: ensuring democratic dialogue and civic participation", while the resolution will focus on the rule of law and the country's European integration process.

The proposal is currently under consideration by the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament, which will decide whether it will be included in the plenary session agenda.

Referring to the protests in Albania, Tridico said that young people are not only rising up for environmental issues, but also for the protection of the rule of law, democratic participation, respect for rights and the improvement of social conditions.

'This is a debate' not only 'about Albania, but above all about a democratic issue, dialogue and participation that must be opened with representatives of civil society', stressed Tridico.

'Girls and boys in Albania are not just protesting about an environmental issue, but about much more: the rule of law, democratic participation, violated rights and low wages ,' he added.
