As Tirana experienced today the strongest civic protest in recent weeks, with violent clashes in front of Parliament and at least 20 protesters violently arrested by police, the German Embassy published a post whose symbolism is difficult to ignore.

Today, on the 36th anniversary of July 2, 1990, the German embassy remembered the day when thousands of Albanians entered foreign embassies in Tirana, describing it as a  "courageous step."   According to the post, those events remain a symbol of the courage of people who choose freedom.

"Driven by the desire for freedom, democracy and better living conditions, they took a bold step into the unknown. The events of July 1990 became a turning point in the history of Albania and contributed to the fall of the communist system. They remain today a symbol of the courage of the people who chose a life in freedom,"  the German embassy's post reads (full below).

The timing of the publication raises questions. On the very day when citizens clashed with police in the largest protest against Edi Rama's government, German diplomacy recalls one of the most significant moments of civic resistance in Albania's modern history.

Is this a calendar coincidence or a reminder with political significance? Officially, the embassy makes no connection between the events of 1990 and today's protests. However, the symbolism is hard to miss.

The post comes at a time when diplomatic circles are increasingly talking about dissatisfaction among European partners with the way Albania is governed, although Berlin has not publicly expressed an open stance linking this post to current developments.

But diplomacy rarely speaks with direct statements. It communicates with symbols, with the time it chooses to speak and with messages that must be read between the lines. Precisely for this reason, the post of the German Embassy in Tirana, published at the height of the largest (and today most tense) protests against the Rama government, has raised a question that cannot be ignored. If Berlin wanted to avoid any political interpretation, wouldn't it have chosen to keep this post in a drawer? Or should it have been published?

For many critics of the government, the battle taking place today in the streets of Tirana resonates with the spirit of July 2, 1990, when thousands of Albanians challenged the regime in search of freedom and a better future./ Lapsi.al
