The fire in Malin e Thata, Prespa Park is at risk

The general director of DPMZSH, Arben Cara, gave a statement to the media after the inspection of the big fire that has engulfed Malin e Thata for 5 days and threatens the Prespa National Park.

"The situation continues with the hearth of the fire active for 5 days, even though we have intervened from the ground and the air, given that the extent of the fire has a very long perimeter, it remains active but not very large in size.

What makes us continue is that we are dealing with an area of bushes, brambles, dry grass, which is impossible to manage with circumstantial means, and for this reason, yesterday we activated the "coogar" helicopter, which worked for a long time and has made it possible to close a fire with a fairly wide perimeter.

We are waiting for today according to the situation, after the operational forces arrive at the scene, where they will give us more detailed information to put the helicopter in motion again, and to keep the situation under control.

Today, in the early hours of the morning, we have activated about 80 operational forces from the Ministry of Health, the three municipalities of Korçë, Maliq, Pogradec, to the aid of the municipality of Pustec near the Pustec fire brigade, operational forces from the army, the agency of protected areas, forces of civil emergencies which are currently going to the fire station which requires at least a minimum time of three hours on foot.

Once the operational forces are deployed, they see the situation on the scene, they will give us a detailed information regarding the development of this fire and then a decision will be made if a specialized intervention from the air will be required as well as during the day yesterday we did it, or is it possible to locate it today until late evening.

If the wind favors us so that it is not active during the day, the fire situation can be interrupted and the mountain of Prespa will not be affected by the fire. If the wind favors it, it is possible that the fire can penetrate into Prespa, which is also a protected area, but the managers of the operational structures will make an assessment in order to activate the intervention from the air so that the fire does not penetrate the mountain of Prespa as it will to create bigger problems for us in terms of its localization and management," he said.
