Men with big bellies are at risk of suffering from this problem

Nine out of ten middle-aged men with waist circumferences greater than 101 centimeters experience erectile dysfunction, according to a study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.

As the findings show, this rate was 25% higher than for those with an average waist circumference of 94cm, who tended to experience only mild erectile dysfunction.

Also, men with larger waist circumferences had almost 25% fewer orgasms and were less sexually satisfied.

Excess belly fat reduces blood circulation necessary for sexual performance and affects testosterone levels, claim the Turkish researchers who conducted the study.

"This is similar to what happens to the arteries when heart disease occurs," says Professor Mustafa Bolat.

Commenting on the study's findings, sexologist Phillip Hodson emphasizes that "a man's larger belly is not only harmful to the heart on a physical level."

"There is now a clear link with the initiation, continuation or termination of sexual intercourse. Also, belly fat converts testosterone to estrogen, interfering with proper hormonal balance."
