NATO's defense plan, what will change for Albania?

NATO's 32 member countries have agreed to spend 5% of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on defense and security by 2035. The decision came after months of pressure, notably from US President Donald Trump, and aims to strengthen the alliance's military capabilities in the face of threats, particularly from Russia and terrorism.

In the joint statement from the summit in The Hague, the countries emphasize that they are committed to investing this percentage in essential defense and security-related areas, to ensure preparedness, resilience, and the ability to prevent and manage crises.

This is an important change, as until now the common target was 2% of GDP, but some countries have not yet reached this figure, such as Spain, which spends only 1.2%.

What will change for Albania from this decision?

Albania, a NATO member since 2009, will be required to gradually increase defense and security spending to reach the new target of 5% of GDP by 2035. This increase includes not only the budget for the Armed Forces, but also investments in infrastructure, technology, training, and equipment.
