The MET Gala 2023, what we know so far about one of the most important fashion

As one of the biggest events on the fashion calendar, the Met Gala 2023 marks the opening of the Costume Institute's style showcase – and has long been celebrated for its outfits that define red carpet glamour. The theme of this year's Met Gala – 'Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty' – will honor the artistic brilliance of the late designer and trace his evolution.

The Met Gala returns to New York's Fifth Avenue on Monday, May 1, 2023, for a retrospective exhibition honoring the artistic brilliance of the late Karl Lagerfeld. The theme of the 2023 Met Gala – 'Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty' – will trace the designer's evolution from winning the Woolmark Prize in 1954, to being hired as an assistant to Pierre Balmain, and revisits his creative career at Chanel, Fendi, Chloé, Balmain, Patou and his eponymous brand, until his death in 2019.

Attendees on the night – which will include event co-hosts Michaela Coel, Penélope Cruz (who made her runway debut at the Chanel Fall/Winter 2019 show), Roger Federer, Dua Lipa and Anna Wintour – will be based their images on the red carpet around the "In honor of Karl" dress code. Starting with Lagerfeld's seminal work, there are plenty of legendary pieces to pull from his extensive archives.

For those unable to attend the 2023 Met Gala in person, you'll be able to watch the event on Vogue's live stream. While this year's red carpet hosts have yet to be announced, the 2022 red carpet was hosted by fashion journalist Hamish Bowles, actress and singer Vanessa Hudgens and actress and presenter La La Anthony.

The last time the Met Gala focused on the work of a particular designer was in 2017 under the theme Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between, which took a closer look at Kawakubo's deconstructive approach to design and distortion of the female form.
