The appearance and circulation of the new variant of Covid-19, Omicron, has forced Greece to take measures to prevent the outbreak of the infection.

According to the Greek daily , unvaccinated people over the age of 60 have until January 16 to get the vaccine, or else they will be fined 100 euros each month. The news was confirmed by the country's Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

About 520,000 people over the age of 60 remain unvaccinated against Covid-19 in Greece. The administrative fine will be charged automatically through the Independent Public Revenue Authority. The measures are part of the government's efforts to increase vaccination levels as it faces an increase in cases and anxiety about the Omicron variant ahead of the holiday season.

About 63 percent of Greece's population is fully vaccinated, although vaccine appointments have increased in recent weeks.

The Greek Prime Minister acknowledged that the measures could be rejected by the population, but stressed that it is the only way to escape.
