Christmas celebrations return to Bethlehem after a two-year hiatus

With a giant evergreen tree, colorful balloons lining the streets, Christmas tourism is back in Bethlehem after two years of Covid-related restrictions.

The birthplace of Christ, the city of Bethlehem welcomes thousands of pilgrims and tourists for Christmas every year.

Now with the lifting of restrictions on the Palestinian territories and Israel, home to the nearest international airport with access to Bethlehem, the southern West Bank city has taken on a festive air.

"Christmas is the city's holiday and we have invested a lot of time and effort to prepare for it," Bethlehem mayor Hanna Hanania told AFP.

The authorities have informed that this year they have received about 700 thousand tourists from all over the world.
