China's propaganda machine is intensifying 'popular war' to

"Let us wage a popular war against the spies, so that they do not move a single step and have nowhere to hide!" That was the call of a Chinese military newspaper over the weekend, as Beijing demands public vigilance against US espionage following the launch of a CIA mission center dedicated to China.

The Beijing propaganda apparatus is now intensifying a multi-year campaign, following the announcement on October 7 by CIA Director William Burns that the China Mission Center would oppose what he called "the most important geopolitical threat with which we face the 21st century, " CNN reports .

A video from Chinese state broadcaster CCTV claimed - without citing sources - the CIA was recruiting Chinese-speaking agents who understand not only Mandarin but also various languages, including Cantonese, Shanghai, Hakka and Hokkien.

Last week, the Chinese Foreign Ministry criticized the CIA's action, which it called "a typical symptom of the Cold War mentality."

Under President Xi Jinping, the Chinese government has launched a number of campaigns in recent years to remind the public of the alleged threat - and to encourage them to act.
