Australia, death toll from melioidosis outbreak in Queensland rises to over 30

The number of people who have died from melioidosis in the Australian state of Queensland since November 2024 has risen to 31.

According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), cases of melioidosis, a disease transmitted by inhaling mud particles or contact with contaminated water, continue in the state of Queensland.

Authorities say the death toll from melioidosis in the state has reached 31, with one person dying in the northern city of Townsville.

Noting that 221 cases have been recorded across the state since the start of the torrential rains in November 2024, officials stressed that the elderly, those who consume excessive alcohol and those with chronic health problems are in the risk group.

Authorities said they expect the number of cases registered in the state to decrease once the heavy rainfall ends.
