More than 50,000 people have been arrested on political grounds following mass protests that erupted following the presidential election held in Belarus in August 2020.
So said Leonid Sudalenko, member of the Belarusian center for human rights, Vyasna. Sudalenko is also a former political prisoner.
According to the Vyasna Center's calculations, at least 5,472 people have been convicted of politically motivated crimes, Sudalenko said.
The protests were sparked after the election results were released, giving authoritarian leader Aleksandr Lukashenko another six-year term, despite widespread evidence of fraud.
The United States, the European Union and some other countries have refused to recognize Lukashenka as the winner of the presidential elections./ REL
