NATO formally invites Sweden and Finland to join the alliance

NATO has invited Sweden and Finland to become members of the military alliance, according to a statement issued by the NATO summit in Madrid on Wednesday.

"The accession of Finland and Sweden will make allies safer, NATO stronger and the Euro-Atlantic area safer," the statement said .

The alliance pledged further assistance to Kiev and agreed on a support package aimed at modernizing the country's defense sector.

At the same time, NATO decided to significantly strengthen its prevention and defense.

"The Allies have pledged to deploy additional strong forces instead of combat readiness on our eastern flank, which will be expanded by existing battle groups into brigade-sized units, where and when required supported by reliable available reinforcements, equipment "pre-set and expanded commands and control," the statement said.

In the communiqué, the alliance described China as a challenge to NATO interests, security and values ​​and as a country seeking to undermine the rule-based international order.
