Vice President Vance, warnings for Europe during the conservative meeting

Vice President JD Vance outlined his conservative views on foreign policy at the annual meeting of the Conservative Political Action Conference, attended by foreign politicians who say they support President Donald Trump's agenda. As a VOA correspondent reports, the conference again highlighted the changing position on the US-EU alliance.

Vice President J.D. Vance warned Europe:

"Of course, we will continue to have important alliances with Europe. But how strong these alliances will be will depend on whether we lead our societies in the right direction," the Vice President said.

Vance spoke Thursday at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference. This year's gathering drew right-leaning European leaders from Argentina, Britain, Poland, Hungary and Italy.

Analysts say they are seeing in real time the process of disintegration of one of the United States' most important alliances.

"I think we need to take very seriously what's happening at the annual conference. We're witnessing a separation of the United States from our traditional allies in Europe, from NATO. This is an 80-year partnership that now seems to be fracturing. I think this is a concern for Americans and for Europe," says Jim Kessler of the Third Way Institute.

But not all Europeans have disagreements with President Trump's administration.

"End the war. President Trump is right. Just as our prime minister has stated, this war must end because it is getting us nowhere. It is stupid. Hundreds of thousands of people are dying," said Balázs Orbán, political director of the Hungarian Prime Minister's Office.

Diana Iovanovici Șoșoacă, a member of the European Parliament who leads a far-right party in Romania, told VOA that she had been invited by President Trump's administration. She said it was her first time attending the Conservative Political Action Conference. She spoke about the views she shares with President Trump, positions that she said led to Romania's Constitutional Court's decision to bar her from running in the 2024 presidential race.

"Because I have positions against the European Union, NATO, against inciting war, or similar issues. Because of my statements about freedom, because I was against the Covid vaccine and because I was against masks, I was the voice of Romania, like you are the Voice of America, and this was considered an anti-constitutional opinion and for this reason I had no right to be elected," says Ms. Șoșoacă.

The Conservative Political Action Conference helped propel Mr. Trump to the forefront of conservative politics. Mr. Trump addressed the conference during his first term; he is expected to address this year's annual meeting on Saturday./ VOA
