Mexico beats South Korea, advances to World Cup knockout stage

Mexico became the first team to qualify for the knockout stages of the World Cup after defeating South Korea 1-0 in their second group match.

Luis Romo scored the decisive goal in the 50th minute, capitalizing on a mistake by Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu. After a cross in the area, Raul Jimenez headed the ball in, but Kim collided with a teammate and lost control of the ball, allowing Romo to score into an empty net.

The first half was characterized by few chances and a slow pace of play, which caused dissatisfaction among the home fans in Guadalajara. The best chance for the Mexicans came in the 20th minute, when Julian Quinones was stopped by a brilliant save from the Korean goalkeeper.

South Korea also had their moments, with Son Heung-min coming close to scoring but his effort was cleared off the line by Edson Alvarez. However, the play was later ruled out for offside.

After the lead, Mexico controlled the game but failed to secure a second goal. In the 75th minute, Kim made up for the previous mistake with a decisive tackle on Jimenez. On the other hand, the Koreans missed their best chance to equalize in the 87th minute, when Cho Gue-sung was stopped by goalkeeper Raul Rangel, who saved his team with a spectacular save.

With this success, Mexico leads the group with six points and mathematically ensures advancement to the next round, while South Korea remains in second position with three points.
