Nosebleeds and stress: what you need to know

Nosebleeds and stress: what you need to know

Nosebleeds, known in medicine as epistaxis, are a common problem that can appear suddenly and at any age.

In most cases, it is related to dryness of the nasal mucosa, local irritation, allergies, or upper respiratory tract infections.

Is stress related to nosebleeds?

Stress is not considered a direct cause of nosebleeds. However, it can have an indirect impact in some cases.

When a person is under stress, the body activates stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol, which can cause a temporary increase in blood pressure. This is usually not enough to cause bleeding in healthy people.

However, in people with hypertension, dry mucous membranes, fragile blood vessels, or allergies, these changes can increase susceptibility to bleeding.

Also, during stress, some people may touch or rub their nose unconsciously, irritating the mucous membrane and damaging small blood vessels.

Why do nosebleeds happen so often?

The nose has many small blood vessels that are located very close to the surface of the mucous membrane, especially in the front part. For this reason, even minor irritations can cause bleeding.

The most common causes are:

dry air (winter or air conditioning)

allergies

respiratory infections

strong nose blowing

itchy or irritated nose

hypertension

blood thinners

coagulation disorders

What to do when bleeding starts:

sit up straight and lean forward slightly

press the soft part of the nose

maintain pressure for 10–15 minutes without interruption

breathe through your mouth

Do not tilt your head back, because blood can go into your throat and cause other discomfort.

Seek medical help if:

bleeding lasts more than 10–15 minutes

often repeated

it is very strong

occurs after an injury

is accompanied by dizziness or weakness

you are using blood-thinning medications

Nosebleeds are usually a harmless and temporary condition. Stress may have a small indirect impact, but the main causes remain dryness of the mucous membrane and local irritation.
