World Cup icon signals end of career after 2026 World Cup

Legendary Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa has left open the possibility that the 2026 World Cup could mark the end of his professional football career.

At 40, Ochoa is making his sixth World Cup appearance, making him one of the most capped players in the competition's history. He has been part of Mexico's squad for every World Cup since 2006, and has become a symbol of the national team thanks to spectacular performances at Brazil 2014, Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022.

The Mexican hero is particularly remembered for his brilliant performance against Brazil in 2014, his historic success against Germany at the World Cup in Russia and his expected penalty against Robert Lewandowski in Qatar.

Currently part of the AEL Limassol club, Ochoa was on the bench in Mexico's opening match at the 2026 World Cup and it is still unknown whether he will have minutes in the upcoming group challenges.

In an interview with FIFA, the veteran goalkeeper could not hold back tears as he read a message from his daughter. It was during this story that he hinted that the end of his adventure with the national team could also mean the end of his career.

"Representing Mexico has always been my compass. Now that my time with the national team is coming to an end, I no longer see the same meaning in football," he said, amid emotions.
