Why should you leave the closet open on hot days?

Shutters closed, windows closed, fan on, but the apartment still remains hot. Maybe one little-known trick can make the difference.

Anyone who enters their apartment on a hot summer day knows that feeling well: the air is heavy, the furniture feels hot, and even inside the house, the heat seems to find no way out.

While fans are running and blinds are down, many people are looking for any little way to make their home a little cooler. One surprisingly simple measure is often overlooked: the closet.

Hidden heat storage

When the sun is scorching outside, it's not just the floors, walls, and furniture that get hot. Even large closets accumulate heat during the day. Things that are near windows or that are exposed to indirect sunlight for hours on end are especially affected.

Warm air collects behind closed doors and remains trapped inside the closet. This is why, on hot days, large closets can unknowingly become small heat reservoirs.

Why can open closet doors help?

The trick is simple: if you air out your house in the morning and open the closet at the same time, cooler air from outside also enters these closed spaces. This allows the accumulated heat to dissipate and escape more easily.

The air inside the closet is replaced before the temperature rises again during the day. Even though the room temperature does not drop by a few degrees, the apartment as a whole may remain a little more pleasant.

Best time: early morning

The key to this trick's success is timing. Temperatures are usually at their lowest in the early morning hours. That's when you should open the windows as much as possible to allow the air to circulate quickly.

At the same time, opening the doors of closets, storage rooms, or large furniture allows fresh air to circulate in these parts of the house as well.

As soon as the outside temperatures rise, the apartment should be insulated as best as possible from the heat. Experts recommend closing the windows and lowering the shutters, blinds or curtains. After that, even the doors of the cabinets can be closed.

This helps keep the fresh air in the room longer and slows down the penetration of heat into the apartment.
