World Cup 2026/ Spain and Belgium take to the field tonight

Two of the World Cup favorite national teams, Spain and Belgium, take to the field tonight for their first matches in the tournament.

Spain will face Cape Verde in Atlanta, in a challenge where they are considered absolute favorites.

Coach Luis de la Fuente has his entire squad available, with Víctor Muñoz, Nico Williams and the exceptional talent Lamine Yamal all back from injury. However, the Spanish coach could rest several key players for this match.

The biggest focus will be on 18-year-old Lamine Yamal, considered one of the future successors to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. The Barcelona forward, who made his debut with the first team at the age of 15, finished second in the 2025 Ballon d'Or and led the Catalans to the La Liga title in 2026 with 16 goals and 11 assists. Despite a thigh injury that sidelined him for the latter part of the season, Yamal has been declared fit to make his World Cup debut.

Meanwhile, in Group G, Belgium and Egypt will face off in Seattle in a duel that brings together two big names in football: Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah.

De Bruyne, 34, after a glittering career with Manchester City that saw him win six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and a Champions League, moved to Napoli last season. However, he missed several months with a serious thigh injury.

Mohamed Salah, on the other hand, remains Egypt's undisputed leader, but has yet to lead the team beyond the group stage at the World Cup. Egypt failed to win a single point in 2018 and failed to qualify for the 2022 tournament. The striker, who turns 34 on Monday, ended his Liverpool career after nine seasons and two Premier League titles.
