Reaction from Brussels on the protests in Albania, PDE: Rama should listen to

The European Democratic Party (EDP), based in Brussels, has reacted to the protests that have been taking place for two weeks in Tirana, describing them as a legitimate expression of democracy and civic participation.

In its statement, PDE appreciates the mobilization of citizens in defense of transparency, public accountability and the environment, while urging Albanian institutions to listen to the concerns raised by the protesters.

The European Party also sends a direct message to Prime Minister Edi Rama, emphasizing that the path towards European integration requires respect for the rule of law and the public interest. According to the response, “Europe is not built by treating nature as a bargaining chip or institutions as private property.”

The PDE underlines that Albania's European aspiration must be based on protecting citizens' rights, strengthening democratic institutions, and guaranteeing transparency in decision-making.

"Last night, Albania's squares filled up again, citizens mobilized to defend protected lands, transparency and public accountability from unclear agreements for luxury developments. This is not 'anti-progress'. It is democracy doing its job."

And Edi Rama should listen carefully: Europe is not built by treating nature as a bargaining chip or institutions as private property. If Albania wants Europe, it must choose rights over shortcuts, citizens over concrete and the rule of law over power, " the reaction reads.
