EU paves the way for Ukraine and Moldova to join

The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced the agreement of the European Union Member States to open the first negotiating chapter in the context of the accession process of Ukraine and Moldova.

The issue is expected to be discussed in the context of the upcoming Intergovernmental Conference, which will mark the opening of chapters on fundamental principles.

In the post, Von der Leyen uses two stars with the flags of Ukraine and Moldova, clearly implying the unification of the EU flag, where from 27 countries it becomes 29. While further on, the 30th country is Montenegro, which will join in 2028.

In their statement they write:

"Today, the European Union took an important step forward. All member states have agreed to open the first round of accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova.

At the first Intergovernmental Conference on Monday, we will open the chapter on fundamental principles, the backbone of the accession process.

This chapter covers the core values and principles on which the European Union is built, from the rule of law to strong democratic institutions.

It is a recognition of the determination, courage, and hard work that both countries have shown in advancing reforms, even in the face of great challenges.

At the same time, it is a message that the EU's offer of peace, stability and opportunity is unmatched.

Expansion is a strategic choice.

By bringing our nations closer together, we strengthen peace, security and prosperity across our continent.

In a world of increasing uncertainty, a greater European Union is in our common interest.

Enlargement remains one of the EU's greatest successes and our best investment in our common future."
