The April 8 decision by the Constitutional Court, which rejected former President Ilir Meta's request to repeal the security measure "prison arrest", is being clarified.

According to the published decision, five members of the Court voted against Meta's claims, while judges Marjana Semini and Marsida Xhaferllari expressed their support for accepting the request. Meanwhile, judge Sonila Bejtja submitted a separate opinion, partially supporting the arguments of the Freedom Party leader.

With this decision, the Constitutional Court left in force the security measure against Meta, assessing that there is sufficient data and evidence that supports reasonable suspicion of the criminal offenses for which he is being investigated.

The court also rejected the claim that the security measure was unjustified or disproportionate, arguing that the legal criteria for its imposition were respected by the ordinary courts.

Regarding the manner of Meta's arrest in October 2024, which he described as humiliating and inhumane, the Constitutional Court did not take a position on the substance of the matter. According to her, this aspect cannot be examined at the moment, as it is still the subject of investigation by the competent bodies following the report filed by Meta himself at the Tirana Prosecutor's Office.

The former president has been in detention since October 21, 2024, and with the April 8 decision, he lost another legal attempt to gain freedom.

According to the reasoning of the Constitutional Court, the examination of his claims did not reveal any constitutional violations that would justify the overturning of the security measure.
