Berisha: DP has never voted in favor of giving cultural heritage to private

Berisha: The DP has opposed the laws that grant cultural heritage concessions to private individuals

The Chairman of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, stated that no Democratic MP voted in favor of the agreement for the management of the Butrint National Park, approved in the Assembly on May 23, 2022.

During a statement to the media, Berisha emphasized that the Democratic Party has opposed the laws that, according to him, pave the way for cultural heritage to be placed under the administration of private interests.

"On May 23, 2022, the assembly approved the agreement for the management of the Butrint National Park with 75 votes in favor, 18 against and 1 abstention. No member of the Democratic Party voted in favor of the agreement. Zero! There was, since the fates were such that we were divided, that one group voted totally against, the others did not participate in the vote or abstained, but there is no democratic vote in that agreement. None! None!" , declared Berisha.

Berisha said that one of the main demands of the protesters is to change the current legislation, which he described as this model contradicts the spirit of the Constitution.

"Today, one of the most just demands of the protesters is precisely the amendment of this law, because this law has treated cultural heritage not as a national asset, but as a commercial commodity, for clientelistic and lobbying interests. The current law places the private sector above the state in the administration of cultural heritage, creating a concessionary model that contradicts the spirit of the Constitution of the Republic of Albania, since this Constitution charges the state with the duty to protect national identity, cultural heritage and not to delegate it to foundations or private interests," said Berisha.
