Environmental alarm at the Shkumbini estuary, syringes, ampoules and hospital waste among vacationers and tourists

Environmental alarm at the Shkumbini estuary, syringes, ampoules and hospital

In the area where the Shkumbin River flows into the sea, among the reeds and abundant plastic waste, syringes, needles, ampoules, small medication bottles and various drug packaging were found. Among the waste found were also medical products such as naphazoline and insulin.

The debris was not concentrated in a single spot, but was scattered over a considerable coastal area. This raises suspicions that it may have been transported by the Shkumbin River and then deposited in the estuary. However, its exact source remains unidentified.

The situation is also considered worrying due to the fact that very close to this area is the Vilbashtovës beach, frequented during the summer season by local and foreign tourists. During the filming of Fiks Fare, visitors were seen walking and relaxing in the area near the shore where the remains were located.

Regarding this problem, the journalists approached the Municipality of Rrogozhina. Initially, they contacted the director of the Health Center in Gosa, who stated that she could not determine the origin of the waste found, but assured that the health centers under her administration implement legal procedures for the treatment of hospital waste.

According to her, the institution has a contract with a specialized company that collects this waste every week, while the closest health center to the area is located about four kilometers away from the Shkumbin River.

Afterwards, Fiks Fare again addressed the Municipality of Rrogozhina. The employee of the information office confirmed that the municipality is aware of the problem and that official letters have been sent to the Municipality of Elbasan and the Municipality of Librazhd regarding this issue, as the Shkumbin River crosses these territories before flowing into the sea.

In a reaction to Fiks Fare, the Director of the Directorate of Education, Tourism and Sports in the Municipality of Rrogozhina, Orges Tosku, stated that the pollution of the Shkumbini estuary is a problem that has been going on for years. According to him, the municipality has continuously notified local and central institutions about the waste being transported by the river, but the necessary funds for a long-term solution have not yet been secured.

He said that the municipality has organized several clean-up actions in cooperation with schools and the army, with the last action taking place in March. However, according to him, the waste is constantly returned after being transported by the river flow.

The municipality representative added that the area is not only littered with plastic waste, but also with hospital waste, glass and even dead animals. He stressed that the only option currently is to organize other clean-up actions, acknowledging that this is not a final solution to the problem.

Meanwhile, hospital waste continues to lie near the coastline, raising serious questions about environmental safety and public health in an area frequented by vacationers. Top Channel
