On the historic EU day, Albania is 'ignored' by Marta Kos

European Union Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos has declared that today is a "Mega Monday" for the EU enlargement process, announcing concrete steps for several candidate countries, while Albania was not mentioned in her statement.

Kos said that Ukraine and Moldova will take the biggest step since receiving candidate status in 2023, with the opening of Cluster 1, after fulfilling the required obligations. Meanwhile, for Montenegro, it was announced that the closure of two more chapters is expected, bringing it to 16 closed chapters in total, about halfway through the membership process.

"Today will be a truly big day, a "Mega Monday" for the enlargement process. First, Ukraine and Moldova will take the biggest step since receiving candidate country status in 2023. We will finally be able to open Cluster 1 to both countries. Why? Because they have fulfilled their obligations and it is time for us to do our part too.

"Secondly, we will close two more chapters for Montenegro. In total, this will bring the number to 16 closed chapters, approximately half of what needs to be completed ," Kos declared.

According to her, if countries deliver results, the EU should also move forward with concrete steps. "If they deliver results, we should deliver results too. That is why I expect that in July we will open the remaining five clusters ," Kos told the media.

On such a historic day for the EU, as Marta Kos points out, Albania's exclusion from the list of advanced countries seems like a clear signal of the union's skepticism towards the Rama government. The EU's stance was also seen in the delay in approving the IBAR report, as it took months for European countries to find consensus.
