Weekend temperatures could reach 39 degrees in Albania

Albania is facing an unusual heat wave for the month of June, with temperatures expected to reach 39°C over the weekend. Meteorologist Tanja Porja warned that the country is recording temperatures about 6 degrees above seasonal norms.

"This week we only have an increase in temperatures, but today they are rising more than we expected. Today more, on Thursday more. Most likely by Sunday we could have 39 in the Albanian territory, an extremely high maximum for the month of June. The maximums of this last decade, which we can call normal in quotes, because none of these last 10 years have been normal, but 30-33 degrees, but above 35 is extremely high for the month of June and in fact it has just begun", said Tanja Porja on Dita Jonë on A2 CNN.

According to her, temperatures will continue to rise every day, easily exceeding 35 degrees Celsius in some areas of the country. The most affected by the heat are expected to be Berat, Fier, Elbasan, Shkodra and Gjirokastra, while Tirana will also approach the 35 degree mark.

"Today it will exceed 35 degrees Celsius and in the following days we have at least one degree increase and we expect 39 until the weekend. Today we expect Berat, Fier, Elbasan with at least 35 degrees Celsius, very close to 35 also Gjirokastra and Shkodra, Tirana close to 35 today, but Berat, Fier, Elbasan and Shkodra are also the hottest cities. Mainly Berat, Elbasan, Fier. This is the triangle I would say that expects the highest temperatures and even exceeds 35 degrees. But do not forget that the maximums from the point of view of climatic normality, for June should be no more than 30°C, while for July and August around 32-33 degrees Celsius. The maximum that we call a normal Mediterranean summer day in the Albanian territory", the meteorology emphasized.

Meteorology emphasized that this year's summer is expected to be among the hottest, as a result of global warming and climate change, adding that the period 2026-2029 is predicted to be one of the hottest in recent years.

"This summer will be quite hot for two reasons. The main reason is the increasing trend of the average global temperature. So the global warming that we have had for several years that we are talking about and climate change. This is the main reason. Each year was presented as an average annual temperature hotter than the previous one. This has been the case since 2015. With somewhat longer-term forecasts, 2026 to 2029 is a very hot three-year period. In addition, we are also in the famous El Nino phenomenon," the meteorologist emphasized.

Although the afternoons will be scorching, the night and morning hours will remain relatively cool, especially in mountainous areas, where temperatures drop to 10-12°C. Meanwhile, the coast appears more comfortable for vacationers thanks to the refreshing influence of the wind.
