MEP raises voice on protests in Albania: Where is public money going?

The protests that have been taking place for days in Tirana and in Albanian communities abroad have now penetrated the debates of European institutions.

During a discussion at the European Parliament in Brussels, Dutch MEP Anna Strolenberg referred to the situation in Albania, emphasizing that citizens who have come out in protest are demanding accountability for the way public funds are used.

According to her, Albanians demand not only economic development, but also the guarantee of basic services and a better standard of living.

"Albanian citizens have clear demands. They want economic progress, but not at the expense of basic needs. When problems such as water supply, health services and salaries remain a concern, it is legitimate to ask whether public money is serving the interests of citizens or a favored minority ," the MEP said.

She also announced that at the end of June she will visit Albania to get to know more closely the developments on the ground and to listen to the concerns of various societal actors.

"At the end of June, I will be in Albania to hear the voices of citizens and to better understand the situation, so that we can identify concrete forms of support ," declared Strolenberg.
