Foods that help protect the skin from the sun

When it comes to protecting the skin from the sun, experts emphasize that food can have a supporting role, but it does not replace sunscreens and physical protection measures.

Dermatologists say that some antioxidant-rich foods may help reduce oxidative stress from UV rays, but the effects remain limited.

Foods that help the skin

Tomatoes – rich in lycopene, an antioxidant linked to reducing skin sensitivity to the sun. It is better absorbed when cooked with healthy fats like olive oil.

Fatty fish (salmon, sardines, trout) – contain omega-3s that help reduce inflammation and strengthen the skin barrier. Salmon also contains astaxanthin, an important antioxidant for cells and collagen.

Carrots, sweet potatoes, squash and green leafy vegetables – rich in beta-carotene and carotenoids that support the skin's natural defenses.

Fruits with vitamin C (blueberries, citrus fruits, peppers) – help maintain elasticity and regenerate the skin.

Green tea – contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory substances that can help reduce sun damage.

Foods to limit

Added sugars and processed foods – increase inflammation and can accelerate skin aging.
