US approves first drug for Alzheimer's disease

The first new treatment for Alzheimer's disease in nearly 20 years has been approved in the United States

The drug Aducanumab aims to treat Alzheimer's, the most common form of dementia, rather than its symptoms, writes the BBC .

This is the only medicine that U.S. regulators have said is likely to treat the disease, rather than manage symptoms like anxiety and insomnia.

The decision, which could affect millions of older Americans and their families, is sure to spark controversy among doctors, medical researchers and patient groups.

This medicine is given as an infusion every four weeks.
