Three Palestinian students are shot dead near the American campus

The families of three Palestinian students killed Saturday in the US state of Vermont have asked police to investigate the attack as a hate crime.

Hisham Awartani, Tahseen Ahmed and Kinnan Abdalhamid were confronted and shot by a man near the University of Vermont Campus.

Officers are investigating a possible motive, but say the victims were wearing a keffiyeh - a traditional headscarf - and speaking Arabic when they were attacked. A suspect has been arrested.

Burlington Police have identified the suspect as Jason J Eaton, 48.

All three students attended Ramallah Friends School, a non-profit Quaker-run private school in Ramallah.
