Cocaine worth 1.2 million euros, Albanian arrested in Austria

Authorities in Austria have arrested a 36-year-old Albanian man yesterday on the Brenner motorway (A13) in Austria. The Albanian had 12 kilograms of cocaine in his car.

The drugs, packaged in 12 packages, were discovered during a search of the Albanian's car, state police director Helmut Tomac said at a press conference on Monday.

If this amount were sold on the street, it would have a street value of 1.2 million euros. This is the largest amount of cocaine confiscated by authorities, while the Albanian is in custody.

The vehicle of the citizen residing in Italy, who sought to travel through Tyrol from north to south with German license plates, was specifically checked based on several criteria.

The 36-year-old was "enmeshed in contradictions" regarding his destination and purpose of travel, said Harald Baumgartner, head of the immigration and border police department. After consulting with German colleagues, suspicions arose that it could be a "smuggling trip."

The Albanian then drove to the Brenner police station and the vehicle was “dismantled” piece by piece, Tomac explained. The 36-year-old has been “rather quiet” so far. We are still at the beginning of the investigation. So far, nothing is known about any accomplices or a larger network, Tomac said.
