Starmer supports US attack on Iran, calls on Tehran to return to negotiations

Donald Trump announced overnight that the US had bombed three nuclear plants in Iran, joining Israel's attack on the Tehran regime, writes The Guardian.

The UK says it had no involvement in the move. Starmer and the foreign secretary, David Lammy, had been pushing for a diplomatic solution amid fears that wider action could further destabilise the region.

On Tuesday, at the G7 summit, Starmer had said there was no indication that the US was planning to join the attack, although later in the week he had warned of a "real risk of escalation" in the conflict, adding that he had had several rounds of discussions with Washington and "this is the way to resolve this issue".
