Pentagon reacts after strike on Iran: Our goal was to destroy the nuclear

Air Force Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine says it will take some time to fully assess the extent of the damage Iran suffered from the US strikes.

"The final toll of the battle will take some time, but an initial assessment of the battle damage shows that all three countries suffered extremely severe damage and destruction ," he said at a press conference.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth opened the Pentagon briefing by saying that last night's attacks were intended to degrade and destroy Iran's nuclear capabilities.

He says the attack destroyed Iran's nuclear program but did not affect Iranian troops or civilians.

Hegseth stated that many presidents dreamed of delivering the final blow to Iran's nuclear program, but no one succeeded until Trump.

"When President Trump speaks, the world should listen," he said, adding that "no other country but the US could have done this."

In one of the last questions, Pete Hegseth was asked if he is worried about how US allies might react.

He says the US understands the challenges faced by allies in the region.

"We have been respectful and have worked cooperatively with them," he says.

Hegseth says Washington has repeatedly invited Tehran to return to the negotiating table.

"They know exactly what the American position is, what steps they can take to allow peace, and I hope they will do that ," he says.
