Europe hit by first heat wave: Up to 40°C expected this weekend

Europe is suffering from the first heat wave of the summer, with warnings issued across all European countries over the weekend.

According to the BBC, due to the heat wave in London, Great Britain, temperatures could rise to 33 degrees Celsius.

This week's hot weather, which peaked on the summer solstice, has seen thousands of people spend time by swimming pools and ponds to cool off. Warnings have been issued about potential heat-related illnesses and to ensure safety when swimming in open water.

Across England and Wales, the death toll from Thursday to Sunday is around 570 people.

By lunchtime, the temperature at Heathrow Airport had reached 31 degrees Celsius. On Saturday, temperatures are forecast to reach 32 degrees Celsius in southeast England, but had already reached that level in London on Thursday.

As The Telegraph writes, schools are canceling sports days due to the extremely hot weather, and parents are blaming teachers for "softening up" their children because of it.

The heat wave has not spared France either. Le Monde reports that since Thursday, France has been experiencing its first summer heatwave, with temperatures approaching or exceeding 35°C in some parts of the country, often 10-15°C above the seasonal average. The heat is expected to intensify on Saturday, reaching 40°C in some southern and western areas.
