Veterinary authorities report further spread of small cattle plague in Albania.

The disease, which affects sheep and goats, has so far marked 10 active outbreaks in several regions of the country, such as Shkodër, Dibër, Bulqizë, Tirana, Korce, Devoll, Skrapar, Lushnje, and Gjirokastër.

The first case of plague was confirmed on a farm in Postribë on June 5. The farm was placed under 21-day quarantine, 19 animals were culled, and the area around it was isolated by 3 to 10 km to contain the spread.

On June 9, the disease appeared on a farm in Martanesh (Val village), where over 150 heads of cattle died. Another outbreak was registered in the Dibra region, where a total of 156 animals were destroyed. Another outbreak was also registered on the Postriba farm, where all infected animals were destroyed.

So far, the number of animals destroyed has reached 1,200. The Ministry of Agriculture has only given advice on how to prevent the plague, but has not yet said whether these farmers will be compensated or not.

The plague arrived in Albania as a result of the introduction of smuggled animals from Romania, which were sold in livestock markets with forged certificates. The failure of veterinary controls at customs or in animal markets has led to the plague being present in several regions of the country today.

This type of disease has a mortality rate of up to 100% of the herd and causes profound economic losses. The disease is not transmitted to humans, but it poses a serious risk to the livestock sector.
