'Gjici' video-scandal, VOA: Tries to give political overtones to the

In Albania, the mayor of Kukës Municipality, Safet Gjici, resigned today after the publication on social networks of a video in which he appeared having sex in his office. Immediately after, the Government announced that it had decided to dismiss him from office, while the Special Prosecutor's Office against Organized Crime and Corruption had meanwhile registered a criminal proceeding against Gjic.

Another socialist mayor is involved in a scandal with a sexual background. After the case of the former head of the Municipality of Dibra, who 7 years ago, was filmed asking for sexual favors in exchange for a job, today the video of the mayor of Kukës Municipality Safet Gjici, re-elected to this post, circulated on social networks on May 14, as a representative of the Socialist Party, while having sex in his office. According to the data in the video, the filming turns out to have been done 10 days ago, around 4:00 p.m.

The first reaction came from the Special Prosecutor's Office against organized crime and corruption, whose competence includes the criminal offenses of high state officials. This prosecutor announced that she had started a criminal proceeding, on her own initiative.

The mayor of Kukës then announced, through a post on Facebook, his resignation as "a minimum obligation" while asking for a public apology to "everyone who has seen that ugly video material".

In his post, the mayor admits that "he has had an intimate relationship with the girl in question for some time", adding however that "there is no excuse for what happened, despite being trapped", he wrote. Although in front of in a flagrant case, the mayor tries to give this event political overtones, blaming his political opponents.

Later, the government, at the end of its meeting, announced through the Minister of Finance, that it had decided to dismiss Gjic from office, despite the latter's announcement of resignation.

The special prosecution has announced that it will request Gjic's escort to interrogate him. In 2016, the former mayor of Dibra, Xhelili, was arrested and subsequently sentenced to 2 years and 8 months in prison under the charge of "passive corruption". VOA
