The mosque in Thessaloniki opens after 102 years, Muslim believers offer the Eid

More than 100 Muslims gathered to pray Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Worshipers gathered at the Yeni Mosque in the northern port city of Thessaloniki on Wednesday.

The prayers took place amid heightened police security, after 102 years.

The decision to open the mosque for prayers was recently announced by the General Secretariat of Religious Affairs. Imam Taha Abdelgaglil, a Greek citizen and member of the religious committee of the Athens Mosque, was selected by the Greek authorities.

The Yeni Mosque, designed by Italian architect Vitaliano Poselli in 1902, was originally built for the city's Dönmeh community, who were crypto-Jews converted to Islam.

However, after the Dönmeh left during the population exchange between Greece and Turkey, the building was re-designated as the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki in 1925. Today, it serves as an exhibition center.
