21 athletes have lost their lives after extreme weather hit northwest China, where a mountain race was taking place, CNN reports .

The "Huanghe Shilin" mountain marathon started on Saturday morning in good weather conditions, but then the weather worsened, bringing rain, hail and strong winds.

As temperatures dropped, runners began to report suffering from hypothermia, while others disappeared. The marathon organizers stopped the race and started searching for the athletes as well as clearing the field. This morning, 151 of the 172 contestants were confirmed safe, eight of them in hospital.
