Vice President Vance's statement distributed by the American Embassy: Where

The US Embassy shared a quote from Vice President JD Vance on social media today, accompanied by a hand dropping a ballot into a box. With only a week to go before the May 11 parliamentary elections, how can this statement be contextualized or interpreted?

First, it should be clarified where and when the US Vice President said it and in what context. The statement “Democracy is based on the sacred principle that the voice of the people matters. There is no room for barriers. Either you defend this principle or you don’t,” was part of his long speech at the Munich Security Conference on February 14, 2025.
This statement was part of a broader criticism of European political practices, especially the exclusion of certain political parties from the mainstream political discourse, which he called – political dividing barriers.

Let us not forget, in the same speech in Munich, JD Vance said that “you cannot win a democratic mandate by censoring or imprisoning your opponents”. In this way, the context becomes clear. The American Vice President, when speaking about the democratic principle, illustrates Albania and the political situation here. His language goes beyond the text of yesterday's resolution adopted by the EPP Congress in Valencia.

Attacking political opponents (Berisha, Meta, etc.); media censorship of the opposition; selective use of justice; labeling the opponent; drowning out the debate and political campaign with noise and fanfare, whether you are with the Prime Minister or against him, you have to admit that they are all in Edi Rama's (for some anti-democratic) political repertoire.

When justice is applied selectively, when the opposition is excluded from institutions and screens, when the administration turns into a party apparatus, then we are not dealing with democracy, but with a simulation of democracy.

Vice President Vance is right: on May 11, Albanians should decide. Without 100 euro electoral 'donations', without buying identity cards, without fear of being fired, without blackmail, without patronage control.
