Cultural tourism in decline, report: Reconstructions in some institutions are

Cultural tourism declined in the first months of the year. Official statistics published by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment show that cultural institutions were visited by 47.2 thousand people, a 2% decrease compared to January-February 2024.

In February 2025, 25,530 visitors visited 28 Cultural Institutions. There is a decrease in visitors to these cultural institutions, but this comes from the fact that some of them have undergone the reconstruction process," the Ministry's publication states.

Currently, the most important institution with closed doors that also had a significant number of visitors is the Historical Museum of Tirana, which will remain closed for at least four years. Last year, it was announced in March that this Museum will reopen in 2028 due to significant interventions.

This closure came in a year when tourism was at its peak, something that prompted reactions from tour operators who considered this a wrong step as Tirana was deprived of one of the important attractions in the total tourist offer it offered to both organized and individual tourists.

But despite this decline, which were actually the most visited cultural institutions?

Among the museums, the Gjergj Kastrioti Museum in Kruja is at the top with 10 thousand visitors, followed by the House of Leaves Museum with 4889 visitors. In third place is the Onufri Iconographic Museum in Berat with 3749 visitors.

Meanwhile, when it comes to other castles and monuments, the one in Gjirokastra is at the top with over 5 thousand visitors, followed by the Durrës Amphitheater with over 1 thousand visitors.

Of the Archaeological Parks, the one in Shkodra is at the top with 8,587 visitors, followed by Butrint with 3,008 visitors.

Expectations are that cultural tourism will follow the pace of general tourism this year as well, with tour operators expressing optimism for a similar performance to 2024, even though the latest figures published by INSTAT regarding the movements of citizens reflected a 2.7 percent decline in March. / Monitor
