Producers and consumers pessimistic, economic confidence indicator fell for

The business and consumer confidence indicator declined in April. According to the Bank of Albania, the Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) decreased by 0.8 points compared to March. The ESI value stands 7.4 points above the long-term average.

The decline in April was particularly driven by the industrial sector, and less so by the consumer confidence indicator. Meanwhile, confidence indicators in the construction, services and trade sectors registered slight increases.

The industry confidence indicator fell by 6.7 percentage points in April, affected by the worsening assessments of domestic and especially export orders. As a result, this indicator deepened its negative values, falling below the historical average. In terms of expectations for the future, businesses in this sector expect increasing employment and falling prices.

The construction confidence indicator rose by 1.3 percentage points in April, for the second consecutive month. This indicator stands about 17 percentage points above the long-term average. The increase this month was mainly determined by higher estimates for the level of current orders. Expectations for employment and future prices are increasing.

The services confidence indicator increased slightly by 0.5 percentage points in April. The level of this indicator stands around 14 percentage points above its long-term average. Both components of the indicator, the current performance of activity and the level of demand, have registered an increase. Business expectations for future employment and prices are also increasing.

The trade confidence indicator has increased by about 0.8 percentage points. This increase was mainly influenced by optimistic assessments of future employment. The current level of the indicator stands about 7 percentage points above the historical average. Also, their expectations for business performance and those for future prices have registered an increase this month.

The consumer confidence indicator fell by 1.3 percentage points in April. However, its current level remains above the historical average by about 2 percentage points.

The deterioration was influenced by the decline in almost all of the indicator's component balances, namely: expectations for the general economic situation, the financial situation and current large purchases. Expectations for the general price level and future employment have been revised slightly downwards. / MONITOR
